With 85% of donated clothing getting thrown out, Awkward Fish seeks to salvage these pieces before they inevitably end up in the landfill. As an artist, I had grown up with a simultaneous interest in fashion and environmental sustainability, and felt stuck on how to create my own brand without contributing to the overgrowing amount of textile waste each year. Awkward Fish became my solution to how I would be able to showcase my art through clothing while also contributing positively to the environment through recycling clothing instead of creating new waste. I look forward to continuously growing and experimenting with my art, and hope to encourage others to invest in uniquely made pieces as a sustainable alternative to mass-production.
